Woolworths is dead. All stores to close after Christmas

All Woolworths’ stores will shut by January 5th 2009, the company’s it was confirmed this morning.

Administrators, Deloitte, said around 200 of the company’s 807 stores would close by December 27th, followed by a second batch of 200 on December 30th, 200 on January 2nd and the final 200 closures taking place on January 5th.

The moves will affect 22,000 permanentworkers and 5,000 temporary staff, although some will be kept on for a short period for administrative purposes.

Deloitte said it had received interest from other retailers for 300 of the higher profile Woolworths locations.

The corporate recovery firm confirmed the closure plan after failing to secure a buyer for the business as a going concern.

This means the woolworth’s brand will likely disappear in the coming weeks.
