Following the collapse overnight of talks between the government and an elite group of social ‘partners’ on measures required to bring the Irish economy back from the brink of bankruptcy, the Irish prime minister, Brian Cowen, will now have an aopportunity to show leadership.
Following 12 years of a system whereby the Irish government was compelled to seek permission from “The Social partners” for any changes in fiscal policy, the government is now free from those shackles and can get on with the process of governing.
Despite advice to ditch the so-called partnership approach a number of years ago, Mr Cowen and his predecessor, Bertie Ahern, persisted in their belief that it was the only way forward. Unfortunately, the economy has collapsed under the burden.
Mr Cowen now has an opportunity to show true leadership!
