China this morning warned USA President, Barack Obama, that his plan to meet the Dalai Lama would further erode relations between the USA & China.
The White House confirmed yesterday that President Obama would meet the exiled Tibetan leader.
The Dalai Lama is considered by Beijing as a separatist terrorist for seeking self-rule for Tibet, his mountain homeland.
China’s angry response reflected deepening tension between 2 of the world’s top 3 economies, with a Beijing government spokesperson noting that President Hu Jintao himself urged Obama not to proceed with the meeting.
Ma Zhaoxu, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, said his government “resolutely opposes the leader of the United States having contact with the Dalai under any pretext or in any form.”
During President Hu’s summit with Barack Obama in Beijing in November 2009, the Chinese leader “explained China’s stern position of resolutely opposing any government leaders and officials meeting the Dalai Lama,” said Ma.
